Trails of Solva

There are few better ways to explore this part of Pembrokeshire than on foot. Around Solva, the coast path winds along clifftops, drops into sheltered coves and opens up views across some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Wales. It's a landscape that changes with the weather, the tide and the time of year, which is probably why we never get bored of it.

Following the coast path

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path passes right through Solva, making it a brilliant starting point for exploring in either direction. Head towards St Davids and you'll find rugged headlands, rocky inlets and wide-open views across the Atlantic. Walk the other way towards Newgale and the coastline gradually opens out towards one of Pembrokeshire's best-known beaches.

Some sections are easy to lose a few hours on. Others are steep, uneven and a little more demanding underfoot. But the best thing about walking here is that there's rarely a need to rush. There's always another view around the next headland, another little cove below the path or another reason to stop for a photograph.

The harbour and the village

Solva has a character all of its own. The village follows the valley down towards the harbour, where colourful boats sit on the water at high tide and the exposed seabed tells a completely different story when the tide goes out.

From the harbour, narrow lanes and footpaths lead up towards the surrounding countryside and the coast beyond. Looking back towards the village from higher up, you get a real sense of how Solva fits into the landscape, tucked into its valley with the cliffs and open sea just beyond.

It's a place where the small details are just as interesting as the big views. Old stone walls, winding paths, patches of wildflowers and the changing colours of the water all find their way into the photographs we take here.

A coastline that never quite looks the same

One of the things we love most about photographing Pembrokeshire is how much the coastline changes from one day to the next. On a clear morning, the sea can be a deep blue, with the horizon stretching out towards the distance. On a grey day, the same cliffs can feel completely different, with softer colours, dramatic skies and waves breaking against the rocks below.

Sunlight catches the grassy headlands, the tide reveals hidden patterns in the sand and rock, and the weather can roll in surprisingly quickly. Even familiar stretches of the path can look entirely new after a change in conditions.

These are the details we look for when out with the camera. Not just the famous viewpoints, but the quieter moments that capture what it actually feels like to spend time along this coast.

Beyond the path

Some of the best views around Solva come from simply taking your time. Follow a smaller footpath away from the main route, stop above a quiet cove or look back along the coastline after rounding a headland.

The surrounding landscape is full of contrasts. Open fields meet rugged cliffs, green hillsides drop towards the sea, and narrow paths lead through stretches of countryside that can feel a world away from everyday life.

It's also a reminder of how much of Pembrokeshire is best explored slowly. You don't necessarily need to travel far to find somewhere worth stopping, sitting for a while and taking it all in.

Bringing a little of Solva home

The places we photograph are often the ones we return to time and time again. Familiar paths, favourite views and stretches of coastline that still manage to surprise us, even after years of exploring Pembrokeshire.

Our Solva prints come from that time spent outdoors, capturing the landscapes, coastlines and little details that make this corner of Wales special. Whether it's a view across the cliffs, the harbour or the changing colours of the sea, each photograph is a small reminder of the place it came from.

If Solva is somewhere you know and love, we hope you'll find a familiar view here. And if you're yet to explore this stretch of coast, perhaps these photographs will give you a reason to visit.
